What sports!

Highlight of the week? Seeing the Tour of Britain leave my home town of Jedburgh on Tuesday morning, a fanfare of sunshine and colour. The whole town was there to welcome them. Later that day I met Team Sky at the unlikely venue of the Strickland Arms in the heart of rural Cumbria. Anton and Penny, who run the C2C staging post, were hosting Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and the other cycle heroes of Britain’s best known team to a slap up supper. They ate the pub bare. Wiggo himself put away three roast dinners with rice and chips, plus a couple of pints. And he was not alone. This must have been a welcome break from the rigid regimen imposed by the Team Sky chef. The lads signed hundreds of autographs and posed for pictures with immense patience and goodwill, winning themselves even more fans. Apparently Wiggo liked the spot and said he’s be back again for a more leisurely visit. Will he have a spin on the C2C? Great Strickland is on the new spur between Ullswater and Penrith.
