The Bonny Moor Hen, 25 Front St, Stanhope, Co Durham

Run by: Zara & Tom

UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP as of May 2018. Different vibe - cycle friendly rather than late night heavy metal. Zara has worked widely in the pub and catering business in Spain and Tom hails from the Dublin pub scene where they know a thing or two about hospitality. Food is home cooked and proving a great success. Everything on the menu costs less than a tenner and you can get change from a fiver for many of the dishes. Beds can be juggled to accommodate groups. Stayed at "The Hen" in May 2011, and had a fabulous time. It was the second night of our three-day C2C journey, and Diane was fantastic. A warm welcome, a good pint, a table all set ready for an evening meal (which was also excellent) and we felt right at home. The bikes were securely locked in the cellar; there was plenty of drying room down there too. The accommodation was basic, with a lack of much hot water, but clean, tidy and everything we needed. Breakfast was cracking, with proper mugs of tea instead of those feeble china cups! Another good chinwag with Diane, a chance to meet Max the dog (who finished the leftover sausages from breakfast!) and we were on our way. A very welcoming place, and a night's accommodation every bit as memorable as the ride itself. Highly recommended.

Update to my review: we're staying again this year, and Diane tells me that all the rooms and bathrooms have been fully refurbished. Looking forward to it!

If you value a good night's sleep do not stay here on a Saturday night, by the time the band finishes and the punters leave it's after midnight, on this occasion we had ww3 kick off outside so it was gone 2am before we nodded off. Not the best preparation for the rideto the coast. Large rooms were comfortable enough and breakfast was nice. Decent pub and beer.will research better next time.

Not happy. We booked for this 3 months ago. A £10 each deposit (£30) was required for us to secure the room. On arrival there was a wedding party going on in the function room. We later found out that our room was directly above this 'do'. It's wrong to put any guest but especially cyclists who need plenty of rest above a noisy function (that was booked only 2 weeks prior). My mate complained about the noise, but was told "we have to make a living", but no apology. On the plus side, the evening meal was very nice & reasonably priced, but accommodation was very poor. It was a shared bathroom with the shower curtain rail not properly attached. Bedroom was very basic. Breakfast the following morning was ok, but not a great deal of choice, only white bread, only sachets of sauces, not HP or HEINZ, no fruit on offer. We had a tough ride from Penrith to Stanhope on the C2C, so poor choice of digs. Defo wouldn't stay there again.
